Intellectual Dancer's Newsletter #006
Current state of mind:
Hello from Orlando, Florida! I was here teaching this weekend for the first time since February 2020 when I was in Hawaii! I've been having fun but I will share more details about this trip next week!
I'm reading a very book called, Spatial Web 3.0, and I read an interesting fact about our brains.
"Our retinas contain an astounding 150 million light-sensitive rods and cones. Neurons dedicated to visual processing in our brains take up close to 30 percent of the cortex compared to 8 percent for touch and 3 percent for hearing."
I wonder how this ties into learning musicality in dance. Over my years of teaching, musicality is one thing a lot of students struggle to grasp. Of course, there is sooo much to be aware of in regards to our own self-awareness with our balance, posture, weight transfer, etc; then there's the actual skill set of leading and following, and if there's any mental capacity left that's what goes to focus on all of the intricacies of the music. With the being said, if only 3% of our brain is dedicated to hearing, seems like it should be an even higher focus to really teach more dedicated musicality fundamentals.
The instructor in me also wonders what could be created to teaching musicality with a high focus on visual animations to depict the musical patterns, compositions, and such. With this approach, you could leverage our brain's visual processing abilities to enhance our hearing processing. I'm also wondering what a musician's brain scan would look like in contrast to a dancer's.
If you didn't know I'm working on developing a musicality course for dancers! Find out how you can support the creation of this course and also earn up to 50% off lifetime access when it is launched by going here.
Another cool bit of information that blew my mind in the book I'm reading about web 3.0 is the word zettabyte, which is 1 BILLION TERABYTES! It showed a graph that in 2020 our collectively global content on the internet is at 40 zettabytes and in 2013 it was only at 1 zettabyte. But 2025, the graph is predicting over 180 zettabytes of information online! WOOOOWWWW!
With this being our future, I can't be to wonder how augmented and virtual reality will be used for teaching dance.
Song I'm currently jamming to:
This X Room Mix by DJ Lenhy has been super nice to listen to, been using it in a lot of my private lessons recently.
Recent content:
I also launched another project called Dancepreneur University where I'm planning to share a lot of helpful content and a future course around the experiences and lessons learned I've had from been a full time dancepreneur over the past 7 years. You can join that email list here.
Question of the week:
When did you transition to more of a focus on the quality of your moves versus the quantity?
Thanks for reading!
